Abstract. The article studies the occurrence of anomie (a state of insanity, loss of values and norms in society) under the influence of globalization. The relevance of this issue is primarily associated with the growth of transnational organized crime and terrorism, as well as the conflict of cultures in a number of modernizing countries. The purpose of the article is to identify conditions that are widespread in globalization and cause the formation of anomie. For the study, a structural-functional approach is used, in particular, the institutional theory of anomie of American criminologists S. Messner and R. Rosenfeld and the theory of dysnomy of the American scientist N. Passas. The author also turns to the idea of a clash of civilizations of S. Huntington and empirical studies of anomie. With their help, a number of causes of anomie have been identified. Firstly, it is «cultural imperialism», caused by the influence of Westernization on non-Western cultures. It is largely based on the values of the «American Dream», which allow reconciling the problem of the connection of social activity and the idea of spiritual salvation. Secondly, the influence of globalization causes resistance to it, for example, in the form of increased archaization, one of the forms of which is glocalization. Two types of cultural conflicts are developing: intercultural and intercultural. An anomaly can be «exported» when borrowing public values and institutions. The third reason is the dysfunction of social institutions caused by the dominance of economic goals over other values. Global processes contribute to the formation of transnational organized crime, which N. Passas calls dysnomy. The author notes that in different countries anomie can manifest itself in different ways and cites data from empirical studies. They allow us to conclude: anomie on an international scale is caused by an insufficient level of socio-economic development and partly by the type of political regime. The results of the study allow us to study globalization and westernization as factors of anomie. The results obtained can be supported by statistical studies, for example, in criminology and terrorism forecasting.
